Sister of Mercy: Work In Progress: Under-painting

For those of you that follow me on Facebook and Instagram, this painting should look familiar. I completed it about a month ago but it was one that I worked on from November throughout. I've posted many Work In Progress (WIP) shots along the journey and decided to compile them all into my blog to see the progress in a more fluid format. You will notice that the majority of the photos either have a flash glare in one corner (witnessed above in the lower right), or have strange lines across the front of the painting. This is due to the fact that my studio, is in fact, my living room, and the lighting isn't the best. To compensate (and ultimately keep me from going blind), I use a halogen work light and that is the cause of the glare and lines...It is what it is! Sister of Mercy: Work In Progress: First Layer of Color

The beauty of working with acrylics as your under-painting is the fast drying of the medium. If time had permitted, I would have begun layering in the oil colors almost immediately. Sadly, I started this painting around the holidays and work interfered with my artwork. Step 6: First layer of color! This is always the exciting part - beginning the first layers of colors in oils. Now that the under-painting is complete, it's time to brighten up the painting a bit by beginning the first washes. This is where my style varies from a lot of artists. Many prefer to layer from lightest to darkest applying one layer over the entire surface at a time. I tend to go somewhere in the middle and build my lights, darks, and mid-tones all at once. I generally prefer to mix my colors on the canvas itself. Even if I have to create a color on my palette, I only create a mid-tone of the desired color, and build the lights and darks by adding pure,...

Back in 2006 I had discovered the art of the ACEO and instantly fell in love. This painting was my second card painted (not including one I did in pen & ink). Since that time I have created several series but this painting still has a soft spot in my heart. Available for sale
